Best North Carolina Road Trips

Road Trips

North Carolina is among the most beautiful states in America, which means that it is also prime real estate for taking road trips. Here are some of the best routes for your next adventure.

Outer Banks

North Carolina is known for its beautiful coastline, so it goes without saying that this would be one of the best road trips. The Outer Banks National Scenic Byway, also known as Route 12, is 137 miles of pure natural beauty.

Getting Into the Countryside

If you’re more interested in getting away from it all, the Nantahala Scenic Byway, also known as US 74, is a bit shorter at 43 miles, but it snakes through the Smoky Mountains National Park and the Nantahala National Forest.

Experience History

To get a taste of North Carolina history, try the Piedmont triad- a combination of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. From colonial towns to Andy Griffith’s childhood home, you will find a lot of cool pieces of history.

If you have the time, you can combine all of these trips for an epic journey through North Carolina. If all else fails, just get on a highway and see where it takes you. You simply can’t get away from natural beauty in North Carolina.

Top Five Road Trip Movies

To help inspire you in these dark and cold winter months, we’ve put together our list of the top five road trip movies.

top five road trip movies

# 1 – Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)

This movie reads more like a guide of what not to do on a road trip. But most importantly, it can remind us that the only way to have a successful trip is to have a sense of humor. Oh, and to never drive the wrong way on an interstate.

# 2 – Thelma And Louise (1991)

It’s somewhat unfortunate that this film only seems to be remembered for its very tragic and now iconic ending. Because otherwise, this road trip movie reveals what a truly meaningful road trip is—a journey within.

# 3 – Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

The Faris family is about the most dysfunctional family as we’ve ever seen onscreen. Their road trip sees them ultimately grow closer as a whole.

# 4 – Tommy Boy (1995)

A true comedy of errors, this movie sees Chris Farley and David Spade having misadventure after misadventure. The lesson we can take away is that they never give up and keep burning miles.

# 5 – Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001)

Two best friends take a transformational trip across the gorgeous Mexican countryside. Reminding us that every good trip is very much about the scenery.
